Poor knowledge of allergies at school
- School meals need to be improved and knowledge increased, says Eva Bengtsson, Swedish
Coeliac League Secretary General, referring to the incident
occurred on Backaskolan in Lund, where an eight year old in the school were getting
milk protein and as a result a severe allergic reaction.
Area rector of Lund was charged after the incident that occurred in 2008, but acquitted
time. The district court states that it is a serious incident to the allergen energetic
åttåringen were getting milk protein, and that this would have been notified to
Work Environment Authority. School officials in Lund knew the notification requirement, but
the lack of routines for the division of responsibility led to the incident
never notified. The fuzzy routines are also the basis for the acquittal
judgment.
- It is unfortunate that such things as this happens, says Eva Bengtsson, and
unfortunately happens far too often. Children must be able to feel safe in
school environment, and it's not just the social environment, but also the food. None
have to be sick to routines for food in the school environment deficiencies.
Swedish Coeliac Society, representing those who can not tolerate gluten, lactose,
milk and soy protein comes in the autumn to conduct a campaign to increase
knowledge of matöverkänsligheterna. Meetings with politicians and officials in
the whole country is on the union's agenda. The goal is to increase awareness in municipalities
and counties so that the food is secured in the public space.
- We see that a major effort is needed, says Eva Bengtsson, for knowledge
if matöverkänsligheter is far too low. An example of this is what
hit the eight-year-old boy in Lund. Such may not happen.
Swedish Coeliac Society has 24 000 members who can not tolerate gluten, lactose,
milk or soy protein. Hypersensitivity to various substances in food is a growing
public health problem. Living with matöverskänslighet means that
constantly check the food you eat.
